    Poznań, on the River Warta in western Poland, is the historic capital of Greater Poland. It has more than 536 thousand inhabitants, while the whole conurbation exceeds a million. The city is known for the Poznań International Fair and for its well-developed road and air infrastructure. It is an important academic centre with 25 institutions of higher education and 110 thousand students. Culturally it stands out for its opera house, philharmonic hall and the Wieniawski International Violin Competition. It is best visited in spring or summer, when temperatures are pleasant.
